This adaptation of Agatha Christie’s ‘The ABC Murders’ is given a dark and sinister new look for BBC1, with John Malkovich playing the part of Hercule Poirot. Adapted from the David Walliams’ children’s book ‘Ratburger’ for Sky1, this 1 x 90 minute comedy drama tells the story of 11-year old Zoe, her pet rat Armitage and Burt – the villain who makes burgers out of rats – and children. Kaye sourced dressing for the set build of Zoe’s high-rise council flat, everything brown, drab and crisp-coloured – in reference to Zoes’ evil step-mother who only eats prawn cocktail crisps. In contrast, Zoe’s room has colour and personaility. Other locations Kaye sourced dressing for include a newsagents, school, Burt’s factory and a builders yard. Working closely with Hollyoaks Head of Design, Kaye sourced dressing for the refurbishment of ‘The Dog’ pub set. This involved meeting a brief to create a fresh, contemporary, quirky style with bright colour, edgy styling and in keeping with the flamboyant and youthful overall feel of the Hollyoaks soap. As the set is designed to last for five years of filming, all furnishings and décor were purchased with this in mind, comprising: bar furniture, bespoke tables, framed artwork, mirrors, lighting, dining tables and stools, decorative ornaments – nautical, taxidermied river fish, rugs, back bar dressing, etc. Kaye also came in on budget.    …

‘The Moonstone’ – King Bert Productions Ltd


This period drama is based on Wilkie Collins’ ‘The Moonstone’, set in the late 1840’s and considered to be the first British detective novel. The plot centres around a stolen priceless Indian diamond and the ensuing investigation into its’ disappearance and recovery, adapted into a 5 x 45 minute mini-series for BBC1 day time. Filmed primarily at Thornton Watless Hall in North Yorkshire, Kaye organized the appraisal of period-appropriate furniture and dressing at the location with an expert valuer and the hire and purchase of dressing props for a total of thirty seven sets – in addition to all action props (including the Moonstone diamond!), animals, vehicles and SFX. Set in contemporary Bradford, ‘Lies We Tell’ is the story a trusted chauffeur (played by Gabriel Byrne) who must deal with his dead employer’s British’ Pakistani mistress, her dark past pulling him into a quest to save her younger sister from an arranged marriage to their gangster cousin. As Set Decorator, Kaye worked closely with Production Designer Janey Levick to source and hire furniture and dressing for a variety of sets including a millionaire’s mansion, a luxury penthouse, an Asian wedding hall, legal offices, a nightclub, a working farm and two Asian family homes. The new Doubletree by Hilton hotel in the centre of Liverpool is a Grade II listed building, designed with the very latest contemporary chic and upscale comfort. Kaye was commissioned to source nautical artifacts such as armillaries, sextants and hurricane lamps to reflect the city’s heritage for the themed library lounge, as well as antiques, luxury ornaments and vintage memorabilia to create other permanent displays in communal areas of the hotel. In keeping with the ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ design scheme in this historic buildings’ luxurious Presidential Suite, Kaye also sourced French and Art Nouveau-style antiques and decorative objects d’art.    …

Blue Brick Care Home, Ripon – Indigo Art Ltd


This new-build care home has been designed as a home for life, comprising seventy bedrooms, café, hair salon, cinema, three dining areas, several individually themed communal lounges and wide corridors throughout. From conducting the initial survey of the whole site, Kaye researched and sourced artwork images to reflect themes of local interest. These include archive images of ‘old Ripon’ and a combination of contemporary photography and prints reflecting the wool trade, canals, river wildlife and famous local people including author Lewis Caroll and poet Wilfred Owen. Written by Lenny Henry, this film for TV is based on his own experiences as a young man from a West Indian family breaking into show business in the mid-1970’s. This psychological thriller centers around Morris, a recluse psychopath who lives in a house in the woods with his teenage daughter, where he captures, torments and murders his victims in his secret basement. As Set Decorator on this production, Kaye interpreted the script to style, furnish and decorate studio sets and locations, sourcing all dressing and action props – which she achieved with a very limited budget and prep time. As buyer on this project, Kaye sourced a variety of props to decorate a family home in North London for a breakfast scene.  Working to a very tight deadline, budget and detailed design brief, this involved both hiring and buying props including a selection of children’s drawings to cover a large expanse of wall, large quantities of specified home furnishings, kitchen accessories and breakfast products. For this one-off feature for BBC2 set in a country estate in the 1940’s – 50’s, Kaye sourced props for dressing and action, including insects and birds.  For a fire stunt, a studio set was built to replicate a library, for which Kaye sourced antique furniture, smalls and books to burn, and organised bespoke fire-retardant drapes to exactly match the original fabric. ‘The Robber’s Tale’ For the first of two films commissioned about the Great Train Robbery of 1963, Kaye researched and sourced vintage fabrics/dressing props and year-specific action props such as walkie-talkies and VHF equipment. For this Wetherspoons refurbishment project, artwork was commissioned to reflect the history of Staffordshire town Cheadle. Inspired by nearby Alton Towers, local artist Simon Watson produced paintings in acrylic on board capturing the facial expressions of exhileration and fear experienced by theme park riders.
